"A cafe nestled away from the noisy city centre, on a moshav offering a wide variety of dishes. Perfect for a brunch or romantic dinner."
Hendale appears quite remote based in Moshav Givat Chen hidden among garden nurseries, a source of calm from the crowded city centre. It was highly recommended by a good friend so my fiancé and I decided to go for my birthday brunch. Although the restaurant is fairly open-plan and large, it has a real homey and relaxed vibe – cushioned crate furniture to sit on outside in the sun, a sofa corner indoors, with a little magazine nook and a coffee bar with some mellow music in the background.
The breakfast menu is vast: Assortment of egg dishes, children’s breakfast, salads and sandwiches to cater for all. You can choose between 2 shakshuka dishes; the red shakshuka, and probably the more traditional one with cumin, tomatoes, garlic and onion. The spinach shakshuka is served in a wrought iron pan, at first glance it appears to be quite a small dish, but looks are (very) deceiving – it is very filling. I had my eggs done medium, the spinach and cheese béchamel sauce complemented each other wonderfully and the richness of the dish with its additions all worked in harmony:
Both our breakfasts came with great, big fat seeded rolls, with a side of butter and a chunky, sweet homemade strawberry jam, 4 dips of olive tapenade, tuna salad, cream cheese and chives and a delicious roast pepper, chive and aubergine cream cheese dip; freshly squeezed juice and a coffee.
Hendale Breakfast special offers your choice of eggs, feta dressed in a delicious homemade pesto sauce, some slices of yellow cheese, black olives and cherry tomatoes and a dollop of whipped cream cheese.
As we always like to finish with something sweet, we decided to have the crumbed cheesecake which is beautifully presented with a coulis of apricot and mixed berry, the cheesecake has a crumbed top and is light and fluffy. We had our coffee (cappuccino) with the cheesecake and even the coffee roast was delicious, with a heart-shaped cinnamon and sugar encrusted biscuit.
The staff were friendly and the food came quickly. The food is also reasonably priced and the servings are generous.
After a very filling, yet satisfying meal, one can always pop into the garden nursery adjacent for some green shopping. One thing is for sure, the meal kept us going throughout the day and we didn’t even have dinner that evening! We will have to return to sample the lunch/ dinner menu next … watch this space!
